A Short Entry About Postcards and Postcard Shows

For those of you who have not yet been initiated into the world of antique postcards, these small, century-old objects offer a vast world of graphics, fine art, history, commerce, social history, and much more. For example, here is an image of a wonderful postcard found at the Wichita Postcard Club Show a few years ago. This card was produced by the Wiener Werkstätte Company in Vienna for the Emperor's Jubilee in 1908. It is titled, Kaiser Huldigungs-Festzug 1908, Heerzug End 16. Jahrh, (Emperor's Jubilee Procession 1908, Army Procession, late 16th Century). The man portrayed is dressed as a 16th-century soldier for the procession honoring Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria.

The illustrator Remigius Geyling, a designer and artist who later taught at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, created this illustration for the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop) Company (1903-1932). The workshop was created to bring good design and craft into all areas of life through ceramics, fashion, silver, furniture, and the graphic arts. The company was promoted as a declaration of modernity over the old order. Remigius Geyling, a designer and artist who later taught at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, created this illustration.

Postcard shows like the Wichita Postcard Club Show, held each October in Wichita, Kansas, attract collectors, dealers, historians, writers, artists and art lovers, designers, the intellectually curious, and treasure hunters to the rewarding world of antique postcards.
